Narrative

Copy of transcript written by Evan Charles Hughes (#57), circa 1968.

1. According to record compiled in the National Library of Wales at the town of Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, Wales.
Richard Vaughan came from Ireland in 15th century and established the Vaughan Family in West Wales. There are 10 families now there. One of the families, John Vaughan, Golden Grove, Carmarthenshire.
South Wales is who we are interested in. My grandmother being daughter of the above John Vaughan and was the only living descendant of John Vaughan. My father was Thomas Evan Hughes, her son. Who therefore was the only male line left of this family.
Upon his death he named me in 1925 AD, to be the person to act on behalf of my brother Thomas John Hughes and sister Mary Elizabeth Hughes, also myself Evan Charles Hughes.
Door number changed from 39 to 41 School Street Tirphil, Glamorganshire, South Wales, Great Britain. House resided in before moved to: 25 Railway Terrace, Tirphil, Glamorganshire.

2. Results of my activities.

Discovered copy of John Vaughans will dated 1786 AD and executed 1804 AD, deposited by Cawdor family in Somerset House, London, England.
An uncle of John Vaughan, also John Vaughan was governor of Jamaica. His daughter was the duchess of Bolton who also had interest in Jamaica along with her fathers, the last mentioned John Vaughan (Lord Vaughan).
He, upon his death bequeathed all his estate to John Vaughan, his nephew. (My great grandfather.) The duchess of Bolton died without issue. My great grandfather, her cousin, inherited her estates, New Castle, Emlyn.
My grandmother left home over a family quarrel with her father regarding his conduct and she married Thomas Hughes at Bedwellty Church, Monmouthshire on 27th, June, 1837AD. My father was born at Victoria, Monmouthshire and registered at Tredegar, Monmouthshire, 30th, May, 1860.
My brother (Thomas john), myself (Evan Charles) and sister (Mary Elizabeth) were all born at 39 School Street, Tirphil, Glamorganshire, South Wales, Great Britain, 1893, 1895, 1900AD, respectively. The number of the house is now 41 School Street, Tirphil, Glamorganshire, South Wales, Great Britain. It was changed when the street was renumbered.

3. John Vaughan (MP) married Elizabeth Letitia Jane (Cornwallis)Tiraude (?) at St. Andrews Church Clifton near Bristol on 2nd June, 1781AD by special liscence of Archbishop of Cantebury, in the presence of Cornwallis, Maude and Willian Lloyd.
She was an invalid and died at the age of 39 years and was buried in the Vaughan Family vault at Llanfihangle Aberlythych Parish Church, Carmarthanshire, South Wales, Great Britain on 7th, May, 1796.
A natural son of John Vaughan by his mistress, Miss Fisher, was buried there too. The natural son's name was James, buried at Llanfihangle Aberlythych (Golden Grove) in 1817AD , age 25 years.

John Vaughan was buried at Llanfihangle Aberlythych (Golden Grove) Carmarthanshire, South Wales,Great Britain on 30th, Jan, 1804AD

My great grandfather, John Vaughan, inherited the estate of his cousin, the duchess of Bolton at New Castle Emlyn, Carthinshire, South Wales. She also held estates in Jamaica. They are recorded at the Archive Office in Spanishtown, Jamaica, West Indies.

5. Letter from Diocesan Registry, 80 Guildhall Street, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, England, 6th, Sept, 1967.
Ref. No. 11/DR/M1SO H, states marriage registers for 1563 to 1846 AD were deposited County Archivist, East Suffolk Record Office, County Hall, Ipswich. Cornwallis family were prominent in Brome Parish and the church there contains memorials to them.

I (Evan Charles Hughes) visited Ipswich in 1968 AD. I saw the marriage register. Births and Deaths Register on same book, 1563AD to 1846AD. No record of John Vaughan and Elizabeth Letitia Jane Cornwallis' marriage in the above mentioned register of 1563 AD to 1846 AD.

Record of the Vaughan family of Geli Aur (Golden Grove) in Carmarthenshire, South Wales,Great Britain. Founder of the Vaughan family of "Gelli Aur" was Hugh Vaughan, a prince of North Wales. There have been 3 "Gelli Aur" residences, two destroyed by fire and situated lower down the road from the present mansion.

Notes on the HUGHES Family.

Note the connection for the same church for marriages - Saint Sannan's Bedwellty. It is a Norman watchtower church built high above the valleys. The name Elizabeth is passed down through many female lines as well as Evan in the male lines.

Evan Charles Hughes.

They were Hudson Bay settlers who left Wales on the "Montrose" - which had stopped at Cardiff to pick up more settlers. The William Garnett family had boarded at Liverpool on April 5. They too, settled in the area but in the Basswood school district south of Vermilion.
Some other settlers came to the same section as Hughes'. They were the Tim Roger's family on the northwest quarter and the Hartley's on the southeast quarter. These people must not have found things to their liking as they left in a few years and returned home.
Upon arriving in Vermilion on April 19, 1929, after a long tiring journey of sea sickness and a rough train ride, they were housed overnight in the Vermilion Skating Rink. The next day they were given supplies, a wagon and four horses. These broncs had been rounded up off the range, driven a few miles around town by some cowboys who handed the reins over to Charlie, a Welsh miner, who had never driven a horse in his life. The other men had similar experiences but somehow they managed to arrive at their farms.
The rest of the family members were driven to their homes by the Hudson Bay supervisor in his car. It was a relief to the weary travellers to arrive at last to a newly built house, clean and smelling of new wood.
The years ahead, in the 30s, were extremely hard ones for people new to this land and with no farming knowledge. They worked very hard, clearing the land, breaking, and picking rocks.
The Hughes boys attended Chatsworth School, and enjoyed playing ball and hockey. Charlie never took to farm life. After a few years, when David was old enough to help out with the farming, he found work off the farm to supplement their income. He worked in coal mines at Rocky Mountain House, Drumheller, and some others near Edmonton. Having been an Air Force Observer in World War I, he obtained employment with the U.S. Air Force in Edmonton during the war and later worked for many years for Air Canada.
Lilian joined him in Edmonton in 1945. She is well remembered for her beautiful voice, as she sang at local concerts. They enjoyed life in the city where they were members of the Welsh Society and Charlie sang with the Welsh Male Voice Choir. Lilian became an avid gardener. Their three lots produced abundantly; vegetables and flowers for many of their neighbors.
Eric joined the Air Force during the war and when discharged attended U.B.C. later settling in
New Westminster, as an employee of the British Columbia Government, in the Department of Agriculture.
David became the farmer, marrying Opal Wear, a local girl. They farmed in the Basswood area on Section 28-48-6 until 1975 when on the death of their son, Evan, they moved into Vermilion.
Opal taught school in some of the local schools when there was a scarcity of teachers; namely, Brockville, Thorncliffe, Preston and Buffalo Coulee.
David became a town councillor in 1977 and Mayor in 1980. He is now in his fifth term. (1995)
They have two daughters: Joanne Heckbert (Doug) and Glenys Perry (Marvin). Joanne lives near Elk Island Park and has a family of two boys, Mark and Scott. Glenys lives near Barrhead. Her family consists of two, daughter Megan and son Kevin.
One of David's fondest memories has to do with Boy Scouts. Marwood Brimacombe, who taught the Ottawa School, organized the troop. Roy Telford (who owned a horse) and Eric would ride while David ran beside them the four miles to Ottawa after school. Then Marwood would say, Well boys, let's go for a hike". He also took the boys to camp at Lake Whitney, a great adventure where they had their first experience with camping, fishing and swimming.
In about 1932, the Agricultural College promoted a Junior Swine Club. The lads went to the bank, borrowed money, which had to be cosigned by their fathers, and then bought pigs. David was encouraged in this endeavor by Mr. Richard Good, who helped him select three young weaners from his purebred Yorkshire litters.
It was one of those pigs that took first prize at the Vermilion Fair. David states that the experience taught him valuable lessons in financing, responsibility, and gave him a sense of pride in a job well done.
