Narrative

letter written by Amy Hodson, dated May 27th, 1978 (for Eric Hodson) for book report
(About Gordon Hodson)
In 1929 the year of the stock market crash Grandpa (Gordon Hodson) was living in Port Alice, on Vancouver Island with his dad (Jonathon Hodson) and his brother. They were working in the pulp mill there. That was the beginning of the Depression years now often called the Hungry 30's. Later that year Grandpa and his dad left Port Alice to go to Galt, Ontario to visit an aunt who was very ill. It took four or five days to cross Canada by Canadian Pacific Railway. After they got settled in Galt, Grandpa set out every morning to look for work. Many times he would walk as far as Hamilton, sometimes someone would give him a ride. Work was scarce so he took a job washing cars for three or four months until he got a job as carpenter for Galt Tack & Nail Co. His job was to build bins and various other things for .25 cents an hour. After living in Ontario for a year they came back to British Columbia and went back to work at Port Alice again until his dad had to go to Vancouver to the hospital. Grandpa came down visit him and decided to try and get a job in Vancouver or thereabouts. He landed a job at King's Lumber Company in North Vancouver after walking many miles every day. In the meantime money was as scarce as work and he lived on applesauce and bread for several weeks until he got his first paycheck. This time his wages were at .48 cents an hour which was good as he had doctor and hospital bills for his dad. In those days there was no insurance plan or no help of any kind.
He worked and lived in North Vancouver and met Grandma (Vera Amy Hodson) and were married (Dec. 22, 1937). He met with an accident and was off work for a couple of weeks. Even though he got hurt in the mill they did not keep his job for him. There were so many looking for work and ready to step in that his job was gone when he went back. There was no unions at that time so employers could have things their way. Now he was looking for work again and this time got work at Robertson - Hackett Sawmills on False Creek in Vancouver. Every morning he was up at 5 o'clock and ran 8 blocks down Lonsdale Avenue to get the first ferry over to Vancouver at six o'clock, which was the first ferry across Burrard Inlet in the morning. The fare was 5 cents each way. In those days it was a forty-eight hour week. After a year he was laid off and went up the coast to a place called Englewood to work for Wood & English Lumber. Grandma went with him and lived across the bay at Beaver Cove. There was no way of getting to work except by boat and a trail through the bush. When going by trail one had to cross a stream by hauling yourself over by cable. There was a box on the cable and it was originally built to measure the depth of the water. There were no stores or roads. The Columbia Coast Mission ship called in periodically with a doctor on board who would look after your woes. Also on board was the Rev. Alan Greene, a great friend of the family. In August 1939 Grandma and Gordy went to Vancouver for a visit to relatives and while there war was declared in September so Grandpa left there to come to Vancouver to join the Air Force. When that didn't work out he went to work for Glaspee Lumber Company as millwright which was his trade. He was frozen to his job and in those times no could change jobs without going before the Wartime Inquiry Board. By this time the wages had gone up to .68 cents an hour. For entertainment we gathered at one another's homes for evenings of parties and dancing. One thing we did learn out of all this was to enjoy simple things. As none of us could afford to spend a lot on entertainment and babysitters we packed lunches and went on picnics and walked around Stanley Park and took in an occasional movie.

notes from Margurite Pyper March 30, 1998

I (Margurite) was junior bridesmaid for your grandparents (Amy & Gordon) and Amy's sister Annie was the other. Since it was nearly Christmas I wore pale green and Annie wore red. The reception was at your great grandmothers home on Capilano Road.
